Funerals at North Church
A Time for Solace and Celebration
One of the most poignant and challenging times in the life of any family is at the death of a loved one. It is the desire of North Church of Portsmouth, United Church of Christ to embrace the family of the deceased with as much love and support, as possible. We do this by making available our facilities, pastoral services, and worship leadership to those experiencing loss.
Steps to take immediately after death occurs:
- Contact the funeral home/funeral director of your choice.
- Call the Minister or have the funeral home be in touch with the Minister.
- In consultation with the Minister, choose a date for the funeral/memorial service or reception. Generally, services are not held on Sundays, holidays, or evenings.
Working together, the funeral director and the Minister will help you, and your family, plan the details of the service.
Planning the Ceremony
Our Minister is present and officiates at all funeral / memorial services held at the Sanctuary or Chapel. If a family desires an additional ordained member of the clergy to assist, the Minister should first be consulted, and will be the one to make the contact and extend the invitation.
Keeping in mind that this is a Christian service of worship, the family is encouraged to make known their thoughts in regards to favorite hymns, songs, readings, or Scriptures.
Music is often an important part of funeral/memorial services. Should you wish to have organ or piano music during the service, the Minister will be in contact with the Director of Music who is responsible for the musical content at any service held in the church. The family may also involve other musicians or recorded music.
We do our best to make the Parish Hall available for receptions. At the request of the family, we can provide the names of local caterers who are familiar with our facility.
Sometimes families choose to say their farewells at a graveside memorial service. Please speak with the Minister to inquire about availability. The Minister will work with you and the funeral director to plan this service.
We worship both in the sanctuary at Market Square as well as the chapel at our Parish House. Please check the calendar to confirm the location for the worship date you are looking for.
