Weddings at North Church
Classical, Historical, Sacred Space
We are delighted you are interested in celebrating your wedding at the North Church of Portsmouth, UCC. We have been serving the Portsmouth community and beyond for almost 350 years through worship, Christian education and faith formation, fellowship groups, pastoral counseling, and service opportunities. Our beautiful Market Square Sanctuary is a perfect location for your special day, offering ease of access to a number of nearby reception venues and hotels.
In keeping with our commitment to social justice and inclusivity, the North Church of Portsmouth proclaims the equal rights of all people, including the legal right for individuals to marry the person of their choice.
Planning the Ceremony
A wedding at North Church is first and foremost a service of worship, celebrating the presence and asking the blessing of God. While the Church most often works with couples who seek a Christian service of marriage, we are pleased as well to extend hospitality to interfaith, inter-religious, and ecumenical couples and will work with you to accommodate your needs.
We anticipate that all couples will work closely with our Minister and meet with her (him) for premarital counseling and planning your unique service. (For those not living in the Seacoast region, these can be done by phone or Skype). The Minister will guide the couple through the understandings of Christian marriage, the form and shape of the service, and the couple’s thoughts and feelings about marriage. Wedding services may be jointly officiated by the North Church Minister and another member of the clergy in good standing.
Along with the Minister, a Facilities Aide will also be present at the wedding rehearsal and wedding service. This person will make sure that all required building logistics will be met.
In keeping with the musical tradition of North Church and dignity of the occasion, organ or piano music for the wedding will be typically provided by the North Church organist; vocalists or additional instrumentalists are also a possibility. Musical selections are customarily of religious/classical nature and discussed with the Director of Music.
A rehearsal is necessary and is usually scheduled on the evening prior to the wedding. Those getting married, their families, and the wedding party should be present. Be certain that all participants are aware of the time the rehearsal will begin. Plan for no more than one hour for the rehearsal.
Other Wedding Sites
The North Church Parish House Chapel comfortably seats 80 guests for a more intimate service. Located at 355 Spinney Rd, a little over a mile from our Market Square location, the Chapel has plenty of free parking and is also close to the same nearby reception venues and hotels.
Our Minister is happy to speak with you regarding officiating at your ceremony at off-site locations.
